The term "Clearing House" meaning includes any agency that brings together seekers and providers of goods, services or information, thus matching demand with supply.

The Clearing-House Mechanism (CHM) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an information sharing mechanism set up to promote and facilitate the scientific and technical cooperation in relation to the objectives of the Convention

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed by the international community during the Earth Summit, at Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1992. The three objectives of the CBD are:
bullet the conservation of biological diversity,
bullet the sustainable use of its components,
bullet the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

The RMI Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) was established to promote and facilitate technical and scientific cooperation within Marshall Islands and among other countries, to join a globaly accessible mechanism for exchanging and integrating information on biodiversity and to develop the necessary human and technological network.

The Clearing House mechanism seeks to support and promote co-operation in six key areas related to biodiversity:
bullet tools for decision-making
bullet training and capacity-building
bullet research
bullet funding
bullet technology transfer
bullet repatriation of information

It is:
bullet Compatible with different levels of national capacity
bullet Needs-driven
bullet Provides access to information
bullet Supports decision-making
bullet Has no vested interest in controlling the expertise or information
bullet Created for the mutual benefit of all participants
