Animals and Plants of the Marshall Islands Deemed Worthy of Conservation Considerations(species and subspecies that have been found in he Marshalls and have been listed by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, international organizations and nearby countries)![]() Contents: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() DEFINITIONS OF TERMS (agency defining): EXTINCT (IUCN) - "A taxon is Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt that the last individual has died". CRITICALLY ENDANGERED (IUCN) - A taxon is Extinct in the wild when it is facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the immediate future." ENDANGERED SPECIES (RMI Endangered Species Act) - any species [any species or subspecies] which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range" ![]() ENDANGERED (IUCN) - A taxon is Endangered when it is not Critically Endangered but facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future." ENDANGERED (US Fish and Wildlife) - any species, subspecies, or distinct population of fish or wildlife, or plant which is in danger of extinction through all or a significant portion of its range" THREATENED SPECIES (RMI Endangered Species Act) - any species [any species or subspecies] which is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range" THREATENED (US Fish and Wildlife) - any species, subspecies, or distinct population of fish or wildlife, or plant which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range" SPECIES OF CONCERN (US Fish and Wildlife) - The terms 'Species at Risk' or 'Species of Concern' should be considered as terms-of-art that describe the entire realm of taxa whose conservation status may be of concern to the Service, but neither term has official status." ![]() VULNERABLE (IUCN) - A taxon is Vulnerable when it is not Critically Endangered or Endangered but is facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future." RARE (IUCN RED DATA BOOK) - Taxa with small world populations that are not at present 'Endangered' or 'Vulnerable,' but are at risk. These taxa are usually localized within restricted geographical areas or habitats or are thinly scattered over a more extensive range." LOWER RISK (IUCN) - A taxon is Lower Risk when it has been evaluated, does not satisfy the criteria for any of the categories Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable. Taxa included in Lower Risk category can be separated into three sub-categories: 1. Conservation Dependent. Taxa are the focus of a continuing taxon-specific or habitat-specific conservation programme targeted towards the taxon in question, the cessation of which would result in the taxon qualifying one of the threatened categories above within a period of five years. 2. Near Threatened. Taxa which do not qualify for Conservation Dependent, but which are close to qualifying for Vulnerable. ![]() 3. Least Concern. Taxa which do not qualify for Conservation Dependent or Near Threatened. COMMERCIALLY THREATENED (IUCN RED DATA BOOK) - Taxa not currently threatened with extinction but most or all of whose populations are threatened as a sustainable commercial resource, or will become so unless their exploitation is regulated. This category applies only to taxa whose populations are assumed to be relatively large." DATA DEFICIENT (IUCN) - A taxon is Data Deficient when there is inadequate information to make a direct, or indirect, assessment of its risk of extinction based on its distribution and/or population status. A taxon in this category may be well studied, and its biology well known, but appropriate data on abundance and/or distribution is lacking. Data Deficient is therefore not a category of threat or Lower Risk. Listing of taxa in this category indicates that more information is required and acknowledges the possibility that future research will show that threatened classification is appropriate. It is important to make positive use of whatever data is available. In many cases great care should be exercised in choosing between DD [Data Deficient] and threatened status. If the range of a taxon is suspected to be relatively circumscribed, if a considerable period of time has elapsed since the last record of the taxon, threatened status may well be justified. NOT EVALUATED - "A taxon is Not Evaluated when it has not yet been assessed against the criteria."
