Our mission:

The mission of the Office of Environmental Planning and Policy Coordination is to protect human health and the natural environment of the Marshall Islands actively supporting a sustainable balance between RMI's economy and its natural environment, and to ensure improved coordination of all international and regional environmental programmes and activities allowing policy coordination to rest directly with the office of the President. Since 2003 OEPPC has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment in the atols.

OEPPC was established by President and His Cabinet (in accordance with the Republic's Vision 2018) which calls for the strengthening of the Government's focus on the issue of Climate Change. Furthermore, climate change is linked to the Rio Conventions: UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Biological Convention (UNCBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification, including all the Protocols as Parties to. Thus, this brings the issue of Climate Change and its associated Kyoto Protocol as a high level issue for the RMI. To this end, the OEPPC will focus on building its capacity to direct its activities on the issues surrounding these three Conventions.

Main duties of OEPPC include the following:
To provide policy advice to President and Cabinet on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and associated treaties particularly the Rio Conventions, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol, The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) and its Cartagena Protocol, The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA), among others.
To ensure adequate attention is given to addressing the RMI's international commitments made through the international treaties signed and ratified, including benefits of being a Party to these Conventions.
To ensure that activities arising from associated international Conventions are linked to national priorities.
To collaborate with other Government Partners/NGOs and Communities in implementing environmental projects/programmes
